6th International Training Workshop, 8 -10 December 2010 *

Latest developments in structure characterisation and transport in porous solids

A comprehensive two-and-a-half day course and workshop on the latest developments in the multi-property characterisation of porous solids and pore fluids
with particular emphasis on mercury porosimetry and soil water retention,

and the Pore-Cor Research Suite void structure, fluid dynamics and 3-D visualisation software.

Davy 601 laboratories, University of Plymouth, UK

Mercury porosimetry continues to be a reliable and extremely useful probe for the structure of porous materials, and is being increasingly supplemented by other methods such as porometry. However, the traditional interpretations of these methods discard and misinterpret highly useful information.

This course will show you how to save money, save time, make more profit and improve the quality of research by
  • making better measurements
  • getting more information from new and existing measurements
  • optimising the properties of your porous materials
  • understanding how different proprieties of your materials relate and interact
  • understanding how porous solids are formed by aggregation, drying and sintering
  • understanding how liquids and gases behave when they are inside a porous solid

The course will be

  • hands-on (use the software on your own portable computer for your own samples or our examples)
  • NOT intensively mathematical - the maths is done for you by the software
  • interactive (groups of 4 - 7 people per trainer)
  • intensive and progressive (all sessions must be attended)
  • tailored to your own needs (on the basis of information you supply before the course)
  • sociable and fun (including a course dinner)

Who should attend?
Anyone who has an interest, or a problem to solve, with regard to the structure of porous materials, or the behaviour of fluids in porous materials. You might be a researcher in a university or industrial laboratory, a technical or research assistant using mercury porosimetry or measuring water retention, or a quality control manager who monitors porous components.

Will it be the same as previous courses?
No. You will be using version 6.4 of the software, which now incorporates a versatile Euler beta throat distribution, an 8-dimensional simplex, and new highly sophisticated algorithms for diffusion, filtration and preferential flow. You will also have a chance to view, and provided input to, the next generation of Pore-Cor, known as Porexpert .
