Problem: Pore-Cor seems to hang or crash, and how to input from a Thermo Electron Pascal porosimeter

Here is a transcript of an email correspondence which should help understand why Pore-Cor sometimes seems to hang or crash, and what to do if you have a Thermo Electron Pascal porosimeter.

If the advice does not answer your query, then please contact us.

Oggetto: Pore Cor electronic brochure

currently I am working through the Pore-Cor electronic brochure, which is installed on my Dell Insion 9100 Laptop (3.2 GHz, 512MB). I realized sometimes freezing of the program, when I was working with the software and in particular with the Tortuosity module, and had to restart. On the other hand I found some impressive features, like the effect of capillary condensation on the diffusion in porous glass.

Well, before I will go on distributing the electronic brochure, can you give me a short list of recommendation what data file should be evaluated with what Pore-Cor module?

I saw that this is sometimes mentioned in the help files, but I would like to inform my customers in the appending letter (in German, where I explain a little bit of Pore-Cor) in advance, not that they get too much frustrated in the very early beginning when playing with the software.

with best regards

I also experience sometimes the freezing of Pore-Cor- Sometimes it also hangs when starting the simplex. So I have to close the software, restart it and then, with the same file, it works. I don’t understand why.

Anyway, xxxx, just use this new version of Pascal software. It has a built-in button to export the files in the format required by Pore-Cor. Open the report page and you will see a button “Export data in Pore-Cor format”.

I’m releasing this new version next week.

Best regards

- yes - I'm afraid Pore-Cor sometimes seems to freeze the first time it is doing a Simplex. In this case, it is usually doing the calculation but deciding not to show it on the screen. Then when it finishes it is OK again. Also when doing calculations after that it is OK. We do not understand why at the moment - there is nothing in the program to cause it to freeze - it is something to do with the way Visual Basic interacts with the computer's operating system - and so it is difficult to do anything about it.
The tortuosity module sometimes takes a long time to do the calculation. It is based on a random walk, and the simulated ion can get trapped in the structure. If it does so, it returns to the top of the unit cell and tries again. If you go to the bottom of your computer screen, and click the other Pore-Cor window tag, the DOS screen monitor should display, and it should tell you how the calculation is proceeding, and how many times the ion has had to return to the top. You can also monitor the wetting calculation in the same way, which is often essential because the calculation can take many hours for wetting times longer than a few milliseconds. So, as far as we know Pore-Cor never actually freezes - it only seems to!
.........
Meanwhile we are making progress on modelling filters and dual-porosity systems. A key component of that is a flow-tracking algorithm, which is now working - see the June 2005 item at http://www.pore-cor.com/latest_news.htm . We have also modified the 3D viewing window in the next version so it is possible to draw more complicated structures without crashing the computer.

All the best,
Peter
